How to Share a File in Windows 7

Let’s say you have a spreadsheet and you would like to be able to make changes to the spreadsheet from your downstairs computer and your upstairs computer. The easiest way to set this up is with Windows 7 running on both computers. The ease with which you can set up a home network in Windows 7 is one of the features which makes this operating system worthwhile but it still took me awhile to find out how to share the same file between two different computers.

I have two laptops and they both run Windows 7. They also are both capable of communicating wirelessly. They also have to both be awake in order to share files.

The first step is to be sure to let Windows help you set up a homegroup when you first set up the second computer. Windows asks you to give your computers a name when you do the initial set up. My first computer is called Edwin-pc and the second one is called EdLisa-pc. While setting up the second pc you first must give the network decryption password and Windows will detect the other pc and instruct you to get the homegroup password. The password will connect you to the homegroup and you have a network. Both pcs must have their location set to home.

If you click on “help and support” in the start menu and search for “create a homegroup” you will get decent instructions for setting up a homegroup and adding computers to it.
